UMass Chan Medical School - Baystate
Springfield, MA, United States
My name is Anthony J. Rousou, M.D., F.A.C.S. I am an Assistant Professor of Surgery at UMass Chan Medical School - Baystate and a cardiac surgeon at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. I grew up in the Springfield area and returned in 2017 to join the cardiac surgical team at Baystate. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to become a heart surgeon as was exposed to the field through my father, a retired cardiac surgeon himself. I attended Yale University for my undergraduate degree and then began my medical education at Tufts University School of Medicine. I completed a General Surgery residency at New York University School of Medicine, where I particulalry developed and learned from the diverse and complex surgical patients at Bellevue Hospital, America's oldest operating hospital. During my General Surgery residency, I took two years away from clinical activities to participate in laboratory research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, investigating myocardial protection. I returned to New Haven, CT, and Yale University for a Cardiothoracic Fellowship which I completed in 2009. My first position out of training was in private practice in the Chicago area where I was performing cardiac surgery in addition to thoracic and vascular surgery. I stayed in Illilnois for eight years until I came to Baystate Medical Center. I am interested in all aspects of cardiac surgery, especially aortic surgery and transcatheter aortic vavle replacement (TAVR); and was an early adopter of the transcarotid alternative access approach to TAVR.
